Online calculator forecasts your financial comeback

If your investment portfolio is down (and how could it not be if you own stocks?), you might want to check out the financial “comeback calculator” at The New York Times.

This interactive calculator lets you see how long it might take (up to 30 years) before your investments return to their peak levels from before the bear market.

The calculator takes the following inputs:

  • Your portfolio’s value at the market peak
  • Your portfolio’s current value
  • The amount of additional funds – if any – you contribute on a weekly, monthly or yearly basis
  • Your estimate of the S&P 500′s expected annual return
  • Estimated rate of inflation

Of course, the calculator isn’t just limited to calculating “comebacks.” You can enter any value as the first input to have it calculate the time it might take to reach any portfolio value goal.
